With less than two weeks to go until Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning tee it up against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady, two things seem certain when it comes to wagering on the charity event:
There is no shortage of places willing to take the bet, and Woods and Manning are the clear favorites. The event, billed as “The Match: Champions for Charity,” will tee off May 24 at 3 p.m. ET at the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla., where Woods is a member. The match will raise $10 million for COVID-19 relief and will be played without fans in attendance.
The betting odds vary, depending on where you look. But here is a sampling of the odds as of late Monday afternoon:
What’s more, DraftKings reported Monday morning that 60 percent of the money wagered thus far had been on the favorites. Earlier this month, Manning pointed out in a video chat with Ernie Johnson of Turner Sports that he and his partner have a combined 17 titles — Super Bowl and majors — to 11 for Brady and Mickelson.
But another look at history would favor the underdogs. Mickelson won The Match against Woods in November 2018, and Brady holds an 11-6 record against Manning in head-to-head games, though Manning was 3-2 in head-to-head playoff matchups. Of course, Brady comes out on top against all other quarterbacks when it comes to Super Bowl wins, his six being two more than the next-closest quarterbacks, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana.
While Manning last played in the 2015 season, Brady this offseason signed a two-year, $50 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after 20 seasons with the New England Patriots. And the fact The Match is being played in what is now Brady’s home state was not lost on Manning.
“I’ll be honest — I’ve never played Tom very well on his home turf,” Manning joked during the video chat.
The match will be simulcast on TNT, TBS, truTV and HLN. Funds will be given to organizations that are providing supplies to health workers, collecting plasma for COVID-19 treatment, helping small businesses survive during the pandemic and feeding those in need. –Field Level Media (@FieldLevelMedia)
