Tiger-Phil II not PGA-approved

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson might reconvene for a second made-for-TV round, but the PGA has no immediate plans to approve the event.

CNBC and Golf.com reported the match could take place as soon as next month in an effort to raise funds to be used for relief from the coronavirus pandemic.

Woods and Mickelson tangled in “The Match: Tiger vs. Phil,” a made-for-TV clash on Nov. 23, 2018, at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Mickelson edged Woods on the fourth playoff hole.

Mickelson was asked by a Twitter user Sunday if the pair might play again to give viewers something to watch while sports around the world are on hold due to COVID-19.

“Working on it,” Mickelson replied.

When another Twitter user asked if Mickelson was serious, he responded: “I don’t tease. I’m kinda a sure thing.”

But the PGA denied the event has been fully approved.

“Discussions along these lines have been ongoing for quite some time, but nothing has been approved by the Tour,” the tour said in a statement Wednesday.

Multiple reports linked Peyton Manning and Tom Brady to the event as possible playing partners of Woods and Mickelson.
