Kentucky head coach John Calipari on Thursday tweeted that leading scorer PJ Washington is out for the Wildcats’ first-round game and has been placed in a hard cast due to a sprained foot.
Calipari on Wednesday said he expected Washington to play when second-seeded Kentucky tips off against No. 15 seed Abilene Christian Thursday night in Jacksonville, Fla.
“The specialists confirmed our original diagnosis that @PJWashington has a sprained foot and there is no fracture. Once we determined that PJ was not going to play today, they put him in a hard cast for precautionary reasons. He is out for today’s game,” Calipari tweeted.
Calipari said Washington sprained his foot in an SEC tournament semifinal loss to Tennessee on Saturday.
Washington, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, is averaging 14.8 points and 7.5 rebounds this season, both tops on the team. He was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection and is viewed as an NBA first-round draft choice should he decide to leave school.
He has earned multiple third-team All-America honors this season.
