Alabama forward Darius Miles is one of two suspects charged with capital murder in a predawn shooting Sunday near campus that killed a 23-year-old woman.

Miles was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail on Sunday. The university issued a statement Sunday that the junior backup forward is no longer with the team. Miles, 21, hasn’t played since Dec. 20 and was ruled out for the season Saturday with an ankle injury.

Jamea Harris of the Birmingham area was shot and killed. The shooting occurred early Sunday morning in the Strip off University Blvd. near the campus.

Miles, a Washington, D.C. native, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, of Charles County, Md., were both charged with capital murder because the death involved shots fired into a vehicle, Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Jack Kennedy said.

“It appears at this time that the shooting was the result of a minor argument that occurred between the victims and suspects after they encountered each other along the strip,” Kennedy said.

The Alabama athletics department released a statement following Miles’ arrest:

“First and foremost, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim from last night’s incident. We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles, and he is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team. Athletics, in conjunction with the University, is fully cooperating with this investigation.”
