He is 405-381 through five seasons at the helm, including a National League Central division title in 2018 and a second consecutive playoff appearance in 2019.
“Leading this organization on the field continues to be a great honor and a unique privilege,” Counsell said in a team release. “I am very proud of what we have been able to accomplish during a short period of time through our collaborative efforts, and look forward to what the future holds.” Already the longest-tenured manager in the National League, Counsell would surpass Phil Garner (1992-99) as the longest-serving skipper in Milwaukee history if he manages the team through 2023.
“We are pleased to extend the contract of one of the best managers in the game today,” Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns said in a statement. “Over the last five seasons, Craig has led our team with a passion and intelligence that has resulted in some of the greatest success in the history of the franchise. I am confident in Craig’s abilities to lead, teach and compete as we continue our mission of bringing a championship to Wisconsin.”
Counsell played 16 seasons in the majors before retiring after the 2011 season with the Brewers. He won World Series championships with the then-Florida Marlins in 1997 and Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001 and finished his career with 1,208 hits and 390 RBIs in 1,624 games.
