Reversing course from its decision to hold events without spectators, NASCAR decided against racing this weekend in Atlanta.
The postponement is expected to be part of a broader shutdown in the sport as the world responds to the coronavirus pandemic, but NASCAR is taking it a week at a time.
“We believe this decision is in the best interest of the safety and well-being of our fans, competitors, officials and everyone associated with our sport,” NASCAR said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor this dynamic situation as we assess future race events.”
The last time NASCAR postponed a race for non-weather-related reasons was the 2001 New Hampshire race following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
