The Rock says XFL will return in spring of 2022

League owner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said Thursday that the XFL will return in the spring of 2022.

“As owners, we’re proud to champion our XFL players, coaches, cities and fans into an electrifying 2022 season,” he posted on Twitter. “It’s an uphill battle – but we’re hungry, humble and no one will outwork us. A league of culture, passion & purpose.”

Johnson, a former World Wrestling Entertainment star turned Hollywood icon, teamed up with an investment firm to purchase the XFL for $15 million in August.

The eight-team league had completed about half of its inaugural 2020 season before suspending play due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Johnson became a major movie star and producer after leaving the WWE. He figures to add a powerful draw to the fledgling league, which has existing broadcast deals with ESPN and FOX Sports. The networks are reportedly seeking to renegotiate those deals.

The XFL filed for bankruptcy in mid-April after suspending operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, citing assets and liabilities between $10 and $50 million.

Vince McMahon, the WWE chairman who launched the XFL in both its first and most recent iterations, has said that he would not be involved with the XFL under new ownership.
