Jenson Brooksby knocked out eighth-seeded Sebastian Baez of Argentina 7-5, 7-5 in the first round of the Chengdu Open on Wednesday in China.
Brooksby withstood seven aces by Baez and saved both break points to win in 1 hours and 43 minutes. He will face either Australia’s James Duckworth or Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the second round.
Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic completed a 6-4, 7-5 win against Chinese wild card Jia Hu in 97 minutes, converting three of nine break points and overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the second set.
Hangzhou Open
Frenchmen Valentin Royer and Kyrian Jacquet won their respective matches against Australian opponents as action got underway in China.
Royer ousted Adam Walton 6-3, 6-4 in just under 90 minutes, while Jacquet needed 2 hours and 47 minutes to book his 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 victory against Aleksandar Vukic.
Royer ripped 14 aces and saved all four break points he faced against Walton. Jacquet hammered 16 aces against Vukic, who fought off 14 of 16 break points.
