The Los Angeles Dodgers’ reported acquisition of outfielder Mookie Betts and left-hander David Price from the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night has inspired visions of the Dodgers finally winning the World Series for the first time since 1988.
And not just among Dodgers fans.
Following news of the trade, the Dodgers’ odds to win the World Series at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas took a major dip, while the Red Sox’s naturally took a pretty sizable jump. After opening the offseason at +600 (meaning for every $1 wagered, a winning bet would return $6 in profit), the Dodgers sat at +500 entering Tuesday. After reports of the trade surfaced, however, multiple outlets reported the odds were down to +350. That is the lowest odds of any team in the National League and second only to the New York Yankees, who are at +300.
On the other hand, the Red Sox — who went from +1200 to +2700 between the start of the offseason and the start of business Tuesday — are now up to +3000 in the post-Betts world.
Already favored to win the NL pennant, the Dodgers saw those odds strengthen to +150 while their odds to win the NL West for the eighth straight season are now at -800 (meaning a bettor would have to bet $8 just to win $1 in profit).
According to reports, the Dodgers acquired Betts and Price, along with cash to help cover roughly half of the $96 million still owed Price, as part of a three-team trade that also included Minnesota. The Dodgers reportedly will send right-hander Kenta Maeda to the Twins and 23-year-old outfielder Alex Verdugo to the Red Sox. Boston will also reportedly get the Twins’ top pitching prospect, Brusdar Graterol.
