Avalanche keep hot streak with 4 straight goals vs. Islanders

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist, Ross Colton and Victor Olofsson scored goals 1:19 apart in the second period, and the surging Colorado Avalanche beat the New York Islanders 4-1 on Sunday night in Denver.

Martin Necas also scored and Scott Wedgewood turned away 28 shots for Colorado, which has won six straight while earning points in each of its last 10 games and has just one loss in regulation this season.

NHL leading scorer Nathan MacKinnon was held off the scoresheet, snapping his 11-game point streak.

Emil Heineman scored for New York and Ilya Sorokin made 25 saves. The Islanders had their four-game winning streak stopped and are 4-1 on their seven-game road trip that continues in Dallas on Tuesday night.

The Avalanche honored New York head coach Patrick Roy with a video tribute during the first timeout. Roy, who won two Stanley Cups playing goaltender for Colorado after coming over from Montreal, retired after the 2003 season as the all-time wins leader (551), a mark that was later passed by Martin Brodeur (691) and Marc-Andre Fleury (575).

The Islanders scored the only goal of the first period that was held up after review. Tony DeAngelo sent the puck from the top of the right circle to the front of the net, Heineman stuck out his left skate and it went off his blade and by Wedgewood at 2:05.

It stayed 1-0 until the Avalanche struck with two quick goals. They tied it when Cale Makar hit Colton with a stretch pass at the New York blueline, he had a step on Adam Pelech and beat Sorokin with a wrister at 4:32.

Olofsson gave Colorado the lead when he skated through the slot and redirected Sam Malinski’s shot from the point at 5:51.

The Islanders were unsuccessful on two straight power plays that spanned the second and third periods. They got one late when Necas shot the puck over the glass at 16:40 of the third. Wedgewood denied Kyle Palmieri’s one-timer.

Sorokin came off for an extra skater and Necas scored into the empty net at 19:23, and Nelson iced it 19 seconds later.
