Mike Gundy takes $1M pay cut after Oklahoma State review

Oklahoma State will cut the pay of football coach Mike Gundy by $1 million and restructure his contract following an investigation into his relationship with his team.

Athletic director Mike Holder said on a video chat with reporters on Friday that Gundy volunteered to take the reduction in pay. In the 2020 season, he was scheduled to earn $5.125 million.

He also agreed to alter his five-year rollover contract, which added a year at the end of every season and never expired. Instead, his contract is a four-year rollover.

Holder said Gundy recommended that, too.

“I commend him for that,” Holder said.

Gundy’s buyout also was reduced from 75 percent of his contract to 50 percent, the Tulsa World reported.

Holder announced Thursday that the internal review of Gundy’s behavior did not reveal evidence of racism.

The probe was launched last month after Gundy drew criticism for wearing a T-shirt with the logo of conservative OAN (One America News Network). Cowboys running Chuba Hubbard tweeted that Gundy wearing the shirt was “unacceptable,” and Gundy apologized the next day to his players for the “pain and discomfort” he created.

Holder’s statement Thursday read, “We have spent the past couple weeks reviewing our program and talking with current and former players. Our internal review found that Coach Gundy needs to invest more time in building stronger relationships with his student-athletes. However, our review has uncovered no signs or indication of racism.

“After meeting with Coach Gundy, I am confident that he listened to his student-athletes. I believe he is genuine in his commitment to strengthening relationships with his players. I believe this to be a win for everyone. I’m looking forward to seeing the impact this will have on our team.”

Gundy played quarterback for the Cowboys from 1986-89. The 52-year-old is entering his 16th season as their head coach and has a 129-64 overall record, including 9-5 in bowl games.
