Cole Carrigg homered twice, including a three-run shot to cap a five-run sixth inning, and the Colorado Rockies beat the surging San Diego Padres, 9-3, in Denver on Tuesday night to snap an eight-game skid.
Carrigg finished with four hits and five RBIs, both career highs for the rookie, Troy Johnston had three hits and Jake McCarthy and TJ Rumfield finished with two hits for Colorado (56-95).
Fernando Tatis Jr., Austin Hays and Luis Campusano homered for San Diego (82-69), which had its eight-game winning streak snapped. The Padres missed an opportunity to move into a tie with Philadelphia for the second National League wild card and within a half-game of the Chicago Cubs.
Hays, Campusano and Jackson Merrill finished with two hits and Walker Buehler gave up two runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Tatis led off the game with his 23rd home run, Campusano hit a solo shot to start the second, his eighth, and Hays went deep in the fifth to give the Padres a 3-2 lead.
The Rockies rallied against reliever Wandy Peralta (3-3) in the sixxth. Mickey Moniak led off with a triple, Johnston doubled and scored on Brett Sullivan’s single that gave Colorado a 4-3 lead. McCarthy singled and Randy Vasquez then came in. Carrigg, who hit a two-run homer in the third, waged a 13-pitch battle against Vasquez.
It ended with Carrigg’s 414-foot shot to right, his 10th homer of the season and third in the last two games, to give the Rockies a 7-3 lead.
They added two more runs in the seventh on Johnston’s run-scoring double and an RBI single by Zac Veen.
Colorado lefty Kyle Freeland returned from the injured list to make what might have been his last home start for the Rockies. Freeland, who was born and raised in Denver, will be a free agent at the end of the season and may not return to his hometown team.
He allowed three runs on eight hits in four-plus innings and left after Hays’ homer. Ryan Feltner (6-10) tossed five shutout innings to close out the night.
