Jake Cave’s HR leads Rockies past Brewers

Rockies, Brewers

Jake Cave hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the sixth inning as the Colorado Rockies beat the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Thursday in Denver to split the four-game series.

Charlie Blackmon had two hits and two RBIs for Colorado, which snapped a two-game losing skid after winning the series opener.

Cal Quantrill allowed two runs over five innings, and Anthony Molina (1-0) and Tyler Kinley pitched the next 2 2/3 frames before Jalen Beeks recorded four outs for his seventh save.

Andruw Monasterio had two hits and drove in two runs for Milwaukee, which went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. William Contreras added a pair of singles.

The Rockies pushed a run across in the first inning when Blackmon hit a leadoff single, moved to second on Ezequiel Tovar’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Ryan McMahon’s ground-rule double.

Blackmon came to the plate again with two outs in the second inning and doubled in two runs against Brewers starter Tobias Myers (5-3).

Milwaukee got on the board with two outs in the fourth inning against Quantrill, who loaded the bases with three walks before Monasterio singled in two runs.

Quantrill gave up five hits over five innings while throwing 102 pitches. He struck out two and walked four.

Brewers right fielder Jackson Chourio extended his hitting streak to 10 games and delivered an RBI double in the sixth inning against Molina to even the score, 3-3.

Colorado regained the lead on Cave’s solo homer with one out in the bottom of the sixth. The 430-foot blast snapped a streak of 208 at-bats without a homer for Cave.

Myers allowed four runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts over six innings.

Milwaukee threatened with runners on the corners and two outs in the eighth inning. Beeks replaced Kinley and struck out pinch hitter Garrett Mitchell to escape the jam.
