NBA fines Nets’ Kyrie Irving for attending party maskless

The NBA fined Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving $50,000 for violating the league’s health and safety protocols, the league announced Friday.

The fine stems from Irving’s attendance at a private indoor party last weekend. It was reported earlier this week that the league was conducting an investigation after video surfaced of Irving at a family birthday party without a mask on.

League rules prohibit attending indoor social gatherings of 15 or more people or entering bars, lounges, clubs or similar establishments.

Irving hasn’t played since Jan. 5, citing personal reasons. He is in the midst of a five-day quarantine period and will be allowed to return to team activities on Saturday if he continues to test negative for COVID-19.

The Nets have gone 3-2 without Irving.

The league said he will forfeit checks for any games he misses during the quarantine. Based on a 72-game season, Irving earns $462,904 per game.

The Nets are scheduled to host the Orlando Magic on Saturday night.
