No. 21 Marquette notches road win in overwhelming Georgetown

David Joplin scored 17 points with nine rebounds, Kam Jones added 13 points with a career-high 13 assists and No. 21 Marquette ended a three-game road losing streak with a 76-61 victory over Georgetown on Saturday at Washington, D.C.

Ben Gold scored 15 points, Stevie Mitchell had 13 and Chase Ross added 12 as the Golden Eagles (22-7, 13-5 Big East) won for the fourth time in their past five games and moved into a tie for second place in the conference standings with Creighton.

Micah Peavy scored 15 points and Curtis Williams Jr. added 14 as the Hoyas (16-13, 7-11) lost their third consecutive game, while seeing a three-game home winning streak come to an end. Jordan Burks had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Georgetown has been without second-leading scorer and leading rebounder Thomas Sorber, who is out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury.

Marquette put its imprint on the game early, going on a 13-2 run to take a 22-11 lead with 8:55 remaining in the first half. The Golden Eagles were up by as many as 20 points in the first half and took a 39-22 advantage into halftime.

Gold scored 13 points in the first half as the Golden Eagles shot 55.2 percent (16 of 29) from the field and held the Hoyas to 19.2 percent (5 of 26). Georgetown made just four field goals until Williams converted a three-point play with 4 seconds remaining before the break.

Marquette led by as many as 28 in the second half at 55-27 with 14:52 left before Georgetown mounted a rally, pulling within 65-53 with 5:48 remaining after a steal by Peavy and a layup in traffic by Williams for an 11-1 run.

Joplin ended the run with a basket and Marquette scored six consecutive points for a 71-53 lead with 3:07 remaining.

The Golden Eagles shot 56.1 percent overall (32 of 57) and had a 46-24 advantage on points in the paint, while Georgetown was 34.5 percent (19 of 55) from the field.
