Canucks come back to down Golden Knights

Golden Knights, Canucks

Conor Garland scored twice, including the game winner, and J.T. Miller collected three assists to give him a career-best 100 points on the season as the host Vancouver Canucks claimed a 4-3 comeback victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday.

Quinn Hughes and Brock Boeser both netted one goal and one assist for the Pacific Division-leading Canucks. Goaltender Arturs Silovs made 20 saves.

The Canucks (48-22-8, 104 points) have a five-point lead on the Edmonton Oilers for the division lead.

Jack Eichel scored twice in a three-point game while Noah Hanifin collected one goal and one assist for the Golden Knights. Goalie Logan Thompson stopped 26 shots and added an assist.

Vegas (42-27-8, 92 points) is holding the Western Conference’s second wild-card position.

Thomas Hertl, acquired from the San Jose Sharks at the trade deadline, collected one assist in his Golden Knights debut, his first game since knee surgery in late January.

With the Golden Knights holding a 3-2 lead, the Canucks cued up their second comeback of the clash starting with Boeser’s 40th goal of the season at 13:10 of the second period.

Garland gave the Canucks their first lead with 1:29 remaining in the second period by pouncing on a loose puck to earn his 18th of the season.

Vegas could not drum up an equalizer despite a third-period push, and ended up surrendering a lead in a second consecutive defeat.

Eichel converted his team’s first shot when he opened the scoring 111 seconds into the clash by using a defenseman as a screen while whipping home a five-hole shot on the power play. He doubled the lead with his team’s second shot on net at the 8:06 mark, burying a feed set up by Jonathan Marchessault’s cross-ice pass for his 29th goal of the season.

Garland provided a much-needed boost for the Canucks by pouncing on a rebound for a power-play goal of his own at 11:50 of the opening frame for his 100th career goal in his 400th game.

Hughes tied the clash with a man-advantage marker at 14:26 of the first period, a point-shot blast for his 17th goal of the campaign.

Hanifin responded with his team’s second power-play goal of the game at 9:33 of the second period, a long point shot for his 13th of the campaign.
