NWSL roundup: Riley Tiernan (2 goals), Angel City rally past Spirit

Tiernan Angel City

Red-hot Riley Tiernan recorded a brace, including the decisive goal in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time, to give Angel City FC a 4-3 road victory over the Washington Spirit on Friday night.

Tiernan has five goals over the past five matches for Angel City (3-2-2, 11 points). Gisele Thompson and Katie Zelem also scored goals for Angel City, who received the winning score two minutes before the match was called.

Esme Morgan scored her first two NWSL goals for the Spirit (4-3-0, 12 points). Her second tally tied the score in the 89th minute. Gift Monday also had a goal for Washington.

The Spirit never led and rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits. However, Angel City got the most important score as Claire Emslie took a corner kick and Christen Press’ glancing header sent the ball to Tiernan, who was just feet from the goal and slammed a right-footed shot into the net.

Seattle Reign 1, Kansas City Current 0

Lynn Biyendolo (formerly Williams) scored in the 37th minute and host Seattle made the tally hold up while knocking off Kansas City.

The goal was the first for the 31-year-old Biyendolo since joining the Reign (3-2-2, 11 points) and her 69th career NWSL regular-season goal. Claudia Dickey made three saves while notching her second shutout of the season.

The Current (5-2-0, 15 points) lost their second straight match but remained in a first-place tie with the Orlando Pride. Debinha knocked in a rebound in the 72nd minute but the goal was nullified as she was ruled offside.

Racing Louisville FC 2, Houston Dash 1

Emma Sears scored the tiebreaking goal in the 70th minute as Louisville knocked off host Houston.

Kayla Fischer scored in the 20th minute for Louisville (2-3-2, 8 points). Savannah DeMelo set up the winner with a wide pass that enabled Sears to get free for a long run down the right side and her right-footed shot caromed off Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell’s foot and into the net.

Avery Patterson scored in the eighth minute for the Dash (2-4-1, 7 points), who lost for the third time in the past four matches.
