Red Wings use three-goal second period to down Penguins

Alex DeBrincat had two goals and an assist, Andrew Copp added two goals of his own and the host Detroit Red Wings won their third straight by downing Pittsburgh, 6-3, Wednesday night.

Ben Chiarot and David Perron also scored for Detroit, while Ville Husso made 29 saves.

Erik Karlsson had a goal and two assists for the Penguins. Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust had the other goals, while Tristan Jarry stopped 23 shots.

The first period ended in a 1-1 tie.

Malkin struck 53 seconds into the game. He brought the puck into Detroit’s zone and passed it to Reilly Smith. Malkin took a return backhanded pass from Smith and scored in front.

The Wings knotted the score when Austin Czarnik skated into Pittsburgh’s zone and found DeBrincat slipping past two defenders. DeBrincat tapped in the puck before Jarry could react.

Detroit dominated the second period and emerged with a 4-1 advantage.

Chiarot scored at 5:21 of the period. He flicked a shot off a Dylan Larkin feed from the left circle that beat Jarry on the glove side. Jeff Petry notched the other assist.

The Wings made it 3-1 when Copp, near the net, redirected Petry’s shot from the right point past Jarry. Michael Rasmussen had the second assist.

With Pittsburgh’s Jansen Harkins in the penalty box for tripping Daniel Sprong, the Wings lengthened their lead to three goals. Jarry stopped a Larkin shot, but Perron was positioned near the goal crease to bang in the rebound. DeBrincat had the second assist.

Karlsson scored at 3:37 of the third to cut Detroit’s lead to 4-2. He beat Husso on the glove side with a shot from the left circle. Sidney Crosby and Ryan Graves had the assists.

Copp had a penalty shot at 7:17, but Jarry made a pad save.

With under seven minutes left, Pittsburgh pulled within a goal as Rust redirected a Karlsson shot.

Copp made up for the missed penalty shot with an empty netter with 1:32 left. DeBrincat added another with 1:11 left.
