Rafa, Serena now heavy U.S. Open favorites

Sportsbooks believe Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams have clear paths to Grand Slam glory entering the final days of the U.S. Open.

Williams is already in the quarterfinals after dismantling China’s Qiang Wang in 44 minutes while dropping only one game on Tuesday. She is being offered at -114 by PointsBet, -150 by DraftKings and -130 by FanDuel as the outright winner.

The No. 8 seed’s biggest hurdle between her and a record-tying 24th Grand Slam victory might come in the semis, when Williams will face fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine. Svitolina earned a convincing 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 16 seed Johanna Konta of Australia in the quarterfinals and is +350, +450 and +430 by the three books.

If Williams can get past Svitolina, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu could be waiting in the final. Andreescu won the Rogers Cup last month when Williams was forced to retire from their finals match due to back spasms. The 15th seed will face Elise Mertens of Belgium in the quarters and then would play the winner of No. 13 seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland vs. No. 23 seed Donna Vekic of Croatia.

Andreescu is being offered at +400 by PointsBet, while the other two books have her at the same odds as Svitolina.

Nadal’s odds dipped heavily after Roger Federer was eliminated in five sets by Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday night. With Novak Djokovic also out of the mix, Nadal is now -295 by PointsBet, -286 by DraftKings and -280 by FanDuel.

The second-seeded Spaniard still needs to get by No. 20 Diego Schwartzman (+4000 by PointsBet) of Argentina in Wednesday’s quarterfinals and then would meet with winner of No. 13 Gael Monfils (+2000) of France vs. No. 24 Italian Matteo Berrettini (+3300).

Nadal has a dominating career record against each of the three. His biggest obstacle is Russian Daniil Medvedev, the up-and-coming fifth seed who is already preparing for a semifinal match against Dimitrov.

Medvedev, who has stirred controversy with his antics toward umpires, ball people and the fans at Flushing Meadows, is +500 by PointsBet, +600 by DraftKings and +550 by FanDuel.

Dimitrov earned his biggest career victory with his stunning comeback against Federer. He is currently the third betting favorite by all three books: +650, +700 and +850.

FanDuel is offering a -130 Prop Bet of Nadal and Medvedev facing off in the men’s final, compared to +220 for an Andreescu-Williams showdown on the women’s side.

Comparatively, a Dimitrov-Schwartzman finals bet is being offered at +4800, while a Mertens-Svitolina match can be made at +1800 odds.
